Newly-released body-worn camera footage shows the moment a man shot two Fall River officers earlier this year.
Nigel Vaughn was shot and killed back in February after he opened fire on three officers outside a home on Linden Street.
Officers were initially called to the neighborhood after receiving reports of a man sitting in a parked car with what appeared to be a gun.
In the footage, the officers can be seen approaching a black SUV and speaking with the man sitting in the driver’s seat, later identified by police as Vaughn.
“We got a call about someone in a black SUV with a handgun,” the officer explains to Vaughn, who shakes his head and holds up what appears to be a black vape pen.
He then asks Vaughn to step out of the car.
“I’m just going to pat you down for weapons,” the officer explains.
“Why are you going to pat me?” Vaughn asks.
“It’s for my safety and for your safety, alright?” the officer replies.
The footage shows the officer patting Vaughn down until he reaches what appears to be his waistband.
“What have you got right here brother?” the officer asks. “Put your hands on your head.”
Vaughn can then be seen attempting to make a run for it right as the officer reaches for the bottom of his sweatshirt.
In the footage, the officer can be seen tackling Vaughn to the ground from behind while another officer comes over to assist.
There’s a brief struggle before three gunshots ring out in rapid succession.
The third officer can be seen running around the car to assist the other two officers with restraining Vaughn. She can be heard audibly gasping as soon as she notices the gun.
Vaughn, who was on the ground, was able to grab the gun from his waistband and shoot up at the officers, prompting all three of them to return fire.
“Shots fired! Shots fired!” the third officer shouts into her radio.
She then runs over to check on the officer who initially searched Vaughn.
