Southcoast Health System is undergoing a transition at the executive level.

The hospitals group, which operates three major hospitals and multiple urgent care facilities in southeastern Massachusetts, announced Friday, Oct. 30, that President and CEO David McCready was stepping down from the position.

The company’s board of trustees announced that Stephen Canessa, senior vice president of External Affairs, was named interim president and CEO effective immediately.

Southcoast Health operates Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, and Tobey Hospital in Wareham. The company also operates seven urgent care centers across the region, including Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Fall River, Lakeville, Seekonk, Taunton and Wareham.

The company says it employs more than 8,500 people locally.

McCready had been the group’s president and CEO since July 2023. He had previously been in the executive leadership team at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital in Boston since 2005, with five years as its president.

According to a statement from Southcoast, the Board of Trustees wished McCready success after his departure.

“Supporting Southcoast Health’s important mission has been an honor. I thank the Board for the opportunity to have led the organization and am proud of the work we have achieved together,” McCready said in a statement.

The reason for the departure was not stated. Southcoast Health has not yet responded to a request for comment.
