Man facing OUI charges after truck crashes into Route 6 home

Police in Swansea arrested a man on Saturday afternoon on OUI charges after he allegedly drove a pickup truck into a home on Route 6.

At around 4:29 p.m., according to Swansea police, 45-year-old Swansea resident Douglas McLane crashed into a house on Grand Army of the Republic Highway.

According to Swansea police, officers quickly removed McLane from the car because they were concerned about a gas leak. He was taken to Charlton Memorial Hospital, evaluated, and charged with OUI and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

Firefighters on scene worked to stabilize the house’s porch, which included installing vertical supports beneath the porch’s roof, which was compromised.

No people were inside the home at the time of the crash. One dog was inside, but was taken from the scene by the homeowners.

Neighbor Joseph Fairhurst said the home’s residents didn’t know their house was hit until they arrived at the scene.

“They were in shock,” Fairhurst said. “It’s a tough thing to come home to that… They’re good people.”

Fairhurst was having a fire outside at his house next door at the time of the crash.

“We heard this loud boom,” Fairhurst said. “As soon as I turn the corner, I saw the pickup truck into the house.”

Fairhurst said he joined first responders at the scene to help remove the driver from the car.

“The guy was passed out,” Fairhurst said “I smacked him in the face a few times just to wake him up… When I woke him up, his first reaction was the typical drunk reaction. ‘Oh, what happened? Where am I?’ Guy, you’re in someone’s living room, what do you want me to do?”

The house was determined to be unsafe to occupy. The truck that crashed into it was towed from the scene.

McLane is expected to be arraigned in Fall River District Court on Monday.
