Clashing in Only Debate, Markey, Deaton Trade Criticism

Category: State News

Clashing in their only scheduled debate, incumbent Ed Markey and John Deaton traded criticism.

Markey repeatedly tied Deaton to President Trump and warned that a Republican win would give the president's agenda another Senate vote.  Deaton pushed back, saying he has never voted for Trump and would make decisions based on what benefits Massachusetts and the country.  He also questioned whether Markey could effectively serve another six-year term, while Markey called the criticism a distraction.

The candidates also debated high energy costs, Medicare for All and Markey's vote to authorize the Iraq War.
