One person has died and another was injured following a stabbing just after midnight Saturday outside of Mezzo Lounge on Charles Street.

 

According to Providence Police Major David Lapatin, the club appeared to be overcrowded and doors were shut to not let additional people in.

 

That’s when he says a fight broke out in the parking lot resulting in the stabbing of two men.

 

One victim, an 18-year-old, suffered stab wounds to the chest. He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

 

UMass Dartmouth identified the victim as Marvins Antoine.

 

“The entire UMass Dartmouth community mourns the loss of Marvins Antoine. We extend our thoughts and prayers to Marvins family and friends during this difficult time,” they said in a statement.

 

A second victim, a 19-year-old, suffered non-life-threatening injuries to the head and neck area. He was also transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment.

 

Police added that both victims were members of the UMass Dartmouth Football team.

 

Police said a suspect is currently being held in the custody of the UMass Dartmouth Police Department.

 

Providence Democratic Mayor nominee David Morales released a statement that read in part “I am heartbroken by the tragic loss of an 18-year-old UMass student whose life was cut short overnight on Charles Street. Just two weeks ago, his mom sent him off to college with hope and pride for everything ahead of him. Today, she and an entire community are grieving an unimaginable.

 

City Council member Justin Roias also released a statement, reading in part “My thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the young man who lost his life, and I’m hoping for a full recovery for the second victim. This remains an active investigation. I’ll share additional information with neighbors as I receive confirmed details.”
