Salvation Army of Fall River 5K run aims to help local families

The Salvation Army of Fall River is inviting runners and walkers to support programs for local children and families during its 16th annual Fall River 5K Walk and Run on Sept. 26 at the Holiday Inn Express, 360 Airport Road in Fall River.

The event will begin with check-in at 8:30 a.m. and the race at 10 a.m., according to a community announcement. Proceeds will remain in the local area to support youth-focused programs, including scholarships to Camp Wonderland, an overnight camp in Sharon, and year-round enrichment activities.

Organizers said the fundraiser helps address needs in a community where nearly 1 in 5 residents live in poverty and some families struggle to afford essentials such as food, winter clothing and afterschool care. According to the announcement, funds raised each year help send dozens of local children to Camp Wonderland at little or no cost to their families.

Founded in 1884, The Salvation Army in Fall River serves residents of Fall River, Freetown, Assonet, Swansea, Somerset and Westport. The organization provides assistance through programs that address hunger, support people experiencing homelessness and offer a range of social services.
