Mass. Tribal Representatives Urging Healey to Ban Native American School Mascots

Massachusetts tribal representatives are urging Governor Healey to ban Native American school mascots.

The Massachusetts Mascot Coalition requested executive action after legislation remained stalled for several years.

The proposal would prohibit Native American mascots statewide, with an estimated 25 communities still using them.

Eight Massachusetts tribes support the measure, and the coalition says the mascots harm Native students and increase bias among non-Native people.

Healey's office has not responded publicly to the request.
