A 64-year-old man has died after he was hit by a car while crossing the street in a mobility scooter in Newport.
Officers were called to the intersection Memorial Boulevard and Chapel Street just after 10:30 p.m. Wednesday after receiving reports of a man in a motorized scooter lying in the middle of the sidewalk.
Police said the victim, identified as John Miles, was discovered lying in the median near the intersection after being thrown from his scooter.
Miles was flown to Rhode Island Hospital in critical condition, where he later died, according to police.
Investigators believe Miles was in the crosswalk when an oncoming truck hit him, throwing the scooter 30 feet away.
