Mass. House Moving to Expand Abortion Access After 24 Weeks

Massachusetts House Democrats are moving to expand abortion access after 24 weeks.

Lawmakers are expected to vote on Wednesday on a bill allowing abortions at that stage based on a physician's professional judgment.  Current law permits them only to preserve a patient's life or health or because of a lethal or grave fetal diagnosis.

Supporters say some patients are forced to leave the state, while opponents say the proposal removes existing protections.

If passed and signed into law, it would make Massachusetts' abortion law among the most expansive in the country.
