A crash involving a stolen car and the recovery of a stolen firearm led to the arrest of a New Bedford man on Monday.
Aaron Nunez, 18, faces several motor vehicle and gun-related charges, according to Acushnet police.
Police said they had been investigating a series of vehicle break-ins when they got a call about a man running through people’s yards in the area of Slocum Street just after 1 a.m.
The initial search came up empty, police said, but an officer who remained in the area heard a loud crash at the intersection of Slocum and South Main streets around 1:45 a.m. and found two heavily damaged vehicles there.
According to police, the preliminary investigation showed a silver Hyundai ran a stop sign and collided with another vehicle. Three people wearing black clothing and face masks then got out of the Hyundai and ran off.
After calling for backup, the officer provided aid to the occupants of the second vehicle before they were taken to the hospital for evaluation, police said.
