A barn in Tiverton burned to the ground after it was hit by lightning Tuesday morning, according to the town’s fire department.
Firefighters were called to Boston Neck Road around 5:30 a.m. to investigate reports of a brush fire.
Instead of a brush fire, the firefighters arrived to find a large barn that was engulfed in flames.
Investigators believe the barn had been burning for awhile before the fire was discovered and reported.
The cause of the fire was determined to be a “direct lightning strike” to the barn as a strong thunderstorm moved through overnight, according to the fire department.
