Former jail librarian convicted for involvement in drug smuggling scheme

The former Bristol County Jail librarian accused of smuggling thousands of dollars’ worth of synthetic marijuana into the prison pleaded guilty last week.

Ginger Hook, 46, of New Bedford, was convicted of delivering drugs to a prisoner and conspiracy. Hook was sentenced to two years of probation as a result.

The investigation began back in March 2025 after the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office learned that synthetic marijuana, commonly referred to as K2, was being smuggled into the facility and sold by several inmates.

Investigators identified 25-year-old Joseph Housley, of Rehoboth, as the inmate responsible for selling thousands of dollars’ worth of K2 while behind bars.

Detectives later learned that Housley had enlisted two former inmates and another associate on the outside to assist him, according to the sheriff’s office.

Housley also reportedly convinced Hook to smuggle the K2 into the facility by disguising it as legal paperwork.
