Driver safe after car pulled from Portsmouth's Gull Cove

An investigation is underway after a man accidentally drove his car into the water at a popular Portsmouth fishing spot Tuesday afternoon.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management told 12 News officers were called to Gull Cove after receiving reports that a car had unintentionally been driven into the water.

The driver was able to escape the vehicle and was brought to the hospital to be treated for mild hypothermia due to the cold water, according to the DEM.

The DEM said the driver was unable to get his dog out of the car, which drowned when the vehicle became submerged.
