Fall River police chief announces retirement amid search warrant controversy

Wednesday was Fall River Police Chief Kelly Furtado’s last day on the job, Mayor Paul Coogan has announced.

Furtado served on the force for nearly 40 years, becoming the city’s first female police chief a year and a half ago.

On Thursday, she announced her retirement would officially take effect June 1. Coogan said she will be on leave until then.

“It’s very sad for the city,” said the mayor, who renewed the chief’s contract back in March. “She’s done a great job for us.”
