'Our community has lost a legend.' Fall River mourns Liberal Silva

Liberal Silva, a respected businessman, philanthropist and longtime pillar of Fall River’s Portuguese-American community, passed away Monday, April 20, at age 85.

Affectionally known by many as the “Mayor of Bedford Street,” Silva is being remembered for his many community contributions and generous heart. His name will forever be linked to various local landmarks, organizations and celebrations.

“Our community has lost a legend,” wrote state Rep. Carole Fiola on her Facebook page. “If you knew Liberal Silva in any way, you knew the impact this self-made man had on his church, his community, his Portuguese culture and especially his family.”
