About Barry

Barry Richard

Morning News Anchor/Reporter

Barry Richard, WSAR's "Bad Boy" of talk,  was born and raised in nearby New Bedford. After abondoning plans to become an elementary school teacher, Barry launched his radio career at WBNH/WMYS as a top 40 “jock." In the early 1980’s Barry’s interests turned to news reporting and eventually talk radio.

Barry’s first “talk” gig was at WJOY in Burlington, Vermont. That was followed by a stint at WKDR in Plattsburgh, New York. More news jobs followed, including WHJJ/WHJY in Providence where Barry worked with the likes of Buddy Cianci, Steve Kass, Moe Lauzier and Arlene Violet.

After those stops, he later worked Public Affairs and Promotions jobs with WCTK and then WPRO in Providence before returning to news at WHJJ/WHJY. Barry returned to talk radio at WBSM in New Bedford before joining the WSAR staff in 2004.

In his career, he has won numerous AP News awards in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York and Vermont.

Barry is happily married with two sons and still calls the Whaling City home.

When he's not sending shockwaves through the SouthCoast from the WSAR Studio, you'll probably find Barry immersed in his hobbies. Whether it's collecting music and Disney "stuff," traveling, or watching sports and politics...Barry usually keeps himself fairly busy!
